Scopes Monkey Trial redux

Awesome! Some folks in Dover, the town where they teach "intelligent" "design" "theory" alongside the modern synthesis ("Darwinian") theory, where the "textbook" Of Pandas and People is employed in classes, are suing the school board with the assistance of the ACLU. Trial starts Monday! This should be entertaining. It's enough to make a boy jump up and down shouting "Ooo! Ooo! Eeee! Eeee! Eeeee!" and fling his feces across the room.

Comments

Meh, I can imagine this turning out well or being deeply depressing, but I can't really imagine it being very entertaining.

I gotta re-read Inherit the Wind .

That all depends on your perspective, Saheli. From ONE perspective (not mine, certainly), only truly awful things are funny.

There is that, but I was thinking more that today's lawyers seem less likely to be bitingly clever since they have to worry not only about charming the jury at hand but also about how they'll sound on print and type around the world---and generally, real wit seems like a rare and increasingly valuable commodity. Rereading inherit the wind, which itself was a highly polished repartee, would probably only increase the contest. If hwoever we could get a zombified Spencer Tracy to do the job, I'd be down with that.

Or some glib lawyer for our side could get the transcripts from the ORIGINAL Scopes trial, and try repeating Darrow's arguments word-for-word. 'Cause it's sad that we're being forced to fight a battle that we were supposed to have WON 80 years ago. And they didn't have the benefit of molecular biology and DNA to back up their hypotheses.
